Dutch-born Erik Huggers has been selected as BBC’s new director of future media and technology, replacing Ashley Highfield.

Huggers joined the BBC a year ago as chief controller of future media and technology, and successfully launched corporation’s iPlayer project.

He will take up the responsibility of BBC’s output on the broadband, mobile, interactive TV, internet, and various other emerging platforms.

Huggers will assume the post on 1 August, and the appointment will also get him a place in BBC’s executive board.

Before joining BBC, Huggers was with Microsoft, where he was behind the launch of MSN portal in West European monarchies- Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, and also played an important role in expanding Windows Media in Europe.

Huggers considers his appointment as a privilege, and promised a diligent response to audience demands of obtaining BBC’s content on wide range of media.

“I look forward to him bringing his drive and determination to this new role, helping ensure the BBC is fit for digital future”, Mark Thompson, director general of BBC said.
