Nortel has been chosen to become the official network Infrastructure partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games and will work with BT to provide a network capable of providing more than 200GBps worth of bandwidth.

The deal will see Nortel provide BT with routers, switches and other networking equipment in the next few months which will allow the rapid deployment of VoIP based infrastructure as well as WAN and Wireless LANs.

According to the networking giant, London 2012's communication solution should be able to deal with 205 international sporting organisations, 20000 worldwide media, nine million spectators, and more than four billion television viewers.

Nortel's president and CEO, Mike Zafirovski, said, "The network infrastructure is fundamental to the games and critical to the delivery of its communications services."

London Olympics 2012 Technology team also includes the likes of Atos Origin, BT and Samsung; furthermore, Nortel will invest at least £40 million as a Tier-1 sponsor.
